Why Every Season of Your Life Has a Purpose

It’s that time of year when one season fades away and another arrives. For me, one of the best parts of a seasonal change is seeing some of my favorite TV shows return, watching the leaves transform into vibrant shades of red and gold, and, of course, enjoying the arrival of pumpkin-flavored coffees and desserts. The changing of seasons is one of nature’s most familiar reminders that we are made to adapt.

Seasons are not only a matter of weather. They also describe the chapters and circumstances we move through in life. I’ve noticed that the turning of the year often coincides with changes in our lives. (Personally, I eagerly anticipate the shift from summer to fall, but I tend to dread the transition from fall to winter.) Life’s transitions are similar: Some are exciting and welcome, while others are harder. Ecclesiastes uses seasonal language to describe this very reality. As the Preacher—the book’s main voice—puts it, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV).

An Appointed Time, Not an Accident

The word translated “season” in Ecclesiastes 3:1 carries the idea of an appointed time. That’s an encouraging truth when we’re walking through a season we would not have chosen for ourselves. The season you are currently experiencing may feel accidental or unexpected, but it is not outside of God’s knowledge or care. It may surprise you, but it has not surprised Him.

Interestingly, the Earth experiences seasons because it is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees on its axis.1 That tilt allows the sun’s energy to be distributed in a way that sustains life across the globe. Seasons are essential for the health and flourishing of many ecosystems. That is how God designed it.

Why God Designed the Seasons of Your Life

In much the same way, God allows seasons in our lives. Some are seasons of growth and abundance, while others are seasons of waiting, refining, or endurance. Take a moment to read Ecclesiastes 3:1–8:

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. (ESV)

Reflect for a moment. Do any of these seasons resonate with you right now?

Biblical truth is timeless. The men and women of faith we meet in Scripture walked through these same seasons—good ones and hard ones alike. Not one of them was wasted. God understands the purpose of every season even when we do not, and He has appointed a time for each one in our lives.

A few verses later, the Preacher explains God’s reason for ordering things as He does: “I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him” (Ecclesiastes 3:14, ESV, emphasis added).

God often uses the changing seasons of life to deepen our reverence for Him—not a fear that makes us run from Him but an awe that makes us trust Him. He sees the entire picture when we can only see a small part of it. When we see the seasons change outside our window, God sees the tilt of the Earth preserving life. His perspective is not ours.

How Do We Endure the Life Cycle of Our Seasons?

If you're in a difficult or uncomfortable season, every part of you may want it to end. That's completely understandable. Yet just as faithfully as seasons arrive, they also pass. Winter gives way to spring. And even when a hard season stretches longer than we can see the end of, it is not the last word.

One of the most comforting promises in this passage is found in Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Notice that Scripture says in its time. Not our time. Not according to our schedule. God’s timing is often different from ours, but it is always perfect. Bare branches look lifeless in the dry winter months, but when spring comes, they bloom again.

When we're tempted to rush out of a season, God calls us to trust Him within it. There are lessons learned in valleys that cannot be learned on mountaintops. There is growth that only comes through waiting. There is intimacy with God that often develops most deeply in seasons of uncertainty.

No matter what season you are walking through today, remember that seasons are temporary, but God's faithfulness is eternal. The God who designed the seasons of the earth also oversees the seasons of your life. If you're in a season of abundance, praise Him. If you're in a season of waiting, trust Him. If you're in a season of grief, lean on Him. And if you're in a season of uncertainty, follow Him. God appointed it, God is present in it, and God will ultimately use it for His glory and your good.

One day you may look back and realize that the season you wanted God to remove was actually the season He used most powerfully to transform you.

Seasons change, but God never does. Let Him carry you through this one.
