Life-Giving Practices for Spiritual Growth | Ep. 123
What are your thoughts and feelings when you hear the phrase “spiritual disciplines”? Do you feel dread? Are your thoughts serious and almost filled with anxiety because you think about all the things you “should do” as a believer (and maybe don’t)? Maybe you’re not even sure what the Bible says are the spiritual disciplines; you’re not sure how these practices are supposed to look in your life. Maybe you wonder where the line is between discipline and legalism.
Our understanding of spiritual disciplines and how we approach them in our everyday lives matters a lot. Spiritual disciplines should be activities that followers of Christ do regularly. They are the means that God has given us to grow in spiritual maturity in partnership with the Spirit. These include Bible intake, prayer, fasting fellowship, service, and more. But guess what? These disciplines, when approached as God has designed, are life-giving practices. They’re the means to grow in grace and experience true joy and intimacy with Christ. They’re for our good!
But so often, we approach spiritual disciplines in a way that is life-sucking. Maybe we do them to gain the approval of man or earn the acceptance of God. Or maybe we do them from a place of guilt. In this episode, we explore different ways we can approach spiritual disciplines that can be life-sucking, but more importantly, we talk about how these practices can be life-giving practices for our spiritual growth.
