3 Ways God’s Love Impacts My Day-to-Day Life
I tell my son right before bed time: “I love you deep as the ocean, high as the sky!”
He gives me a hug and I look right in his eyes, asking, “Do you know who loves you even more than mom?”
“God,” he says.
“Yes, now sleep tight.”
This little conversation is our nighttime routine. It’s simple, but intentional. If I am being honest, it likely encourages me even more than it does my son. As silly as it sounds, God’s love for us really is deeper than the ocean and higher than the sky—it’s longer and wider and taller and deeper than we could ever imagine (Ephesians 3:18). Why am I so quick to forget? How often do I fail to ponder the depth of God’s love? I am convinced God’s love transforms our lives. Next time your faith feels stale, next time the love of God feels distant, remember God’s love impacts each moment of your life. Remember that God’s love assures you, teaches you, and gives you purpose. Try reading these truths to yourself below.
God’s love assures me.
God’s love is proven in Jesus (Romans 5:8). God looked upon my worst moments, my darkest days, and still chose to save me through Christ’s death. I am an adopted child of God not of my own accord, but purely out of God’s faithful love—a faithful love that is so essential to God’s character that the psalmist of Psalm 118 continually repeats, “his faithful love endures forever.” God is love. First John 4:15–17 says, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.”
God’s love remains in me. I am His and He is mine. I belong to Christ. I am His sheep, He is my Shepherd (John 10). No one can snatch me from His hand (John 10:28). No matter what trials come to pass, I can rest secure in Christ’s faithful love. It is true no matter what the day brings. I can brave any danger, face any fear, because God’s faithful love for me endures forever.
God’s love teaches me.
God’s love is a sacrificial love. Sacrifice means “surrender of something for the sake of something else.” When applied to God’s love, God was willing to surrender His Son for my sake. My redemption cost God not just something but Someone. God forged the road of love that I now walk. He is worth following, worth imitating. Jesus, pure in holiness, touched the leper to heal him (Matthew 8:3). Jesus, the King of kings, knelt before His disciples to wash their feet (John 13:1–17). Jesus, the God of Glory, was a man of sorrows. Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, gave His life for me. Jesus commanded His disciples: “Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another” (John 13:34). My love for others is rooted in Christ’s love for me. God’s love, shown in Christ’s life, models for me what loving others practically looks like.
God’s love gives me purpose.
God’s love gives me purpose. No longer am I living for myself and my own gain—I am living for God. My purpose is worship. Ephesians beautifully describes the abundance I have in Christ: “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in our tresspasses. You are saved by grace!’’ (Ephesians 2:4–5). A few verses later, Paul proclaims, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). I was created, made anew in Jesus, for good works that proclaim the goodness of my Maker. My days are no longer filled with meaningless tasks for temporary gains, but with meaningful tasks for eternal gains. The Holy Spirit will continually renew my mind (Romans 12:2), helping me to serve like my Savior—not in obligation but in joy. God’s love, shown in Christ, working in me through the Holy Spirit, transforms my heart’s posture. Everything becomes an opportunity to worship. Dinners prepared, emails sent, diapers changed, coffees shared, all an opportunity to love as God has loved me. Mundane moments matter for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). God’s love gives me purpose.
As Paul writes to the Ephesians in Ephesians 3, his prayer is that they may be rooted and firmly established in love, able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length, width, height, and depth of God’s love. As I peer at the ocean, filled with hundreds of thousands of gallons of water, teeming with fish both microscopic and gigantic alike, I become convinced that diving into the depths of God’s love will be a life-long pursuit. Deep as the ocean, high as the sky, God’s love for us stretches far and wide. May our days be marked by discovering new mercies, new ways that God’s love transforms the details—big and small—of our lives.
