5 Verses to Share the Gospel with Your Children

There’s no greater way to love your children than by telling them about the love of Jesus. They need to be reminded over and over again that God loves them so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on a cross to save them from sin. Therefore, each and every day, there’s an opportunity for you to share the gospel with your children. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by—lean into them!

However, sometimes you may not know where to begin when teaching your children about the gospel message. And while there’s no right way to share the good news of Jesus, below are five helpful verses, with talking prompts, to help you communicate the truth of the gospel to your children.

1. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Ask your children what this verse says about sin.

  • What definition of sin does this verse give us?
  • Who sins?

Have them share with you how they have sinned—perhaps they have lied, have had a bad attitude, or have stolen toys from their siblings. Show them that we are all born sinners and don’t love God with our whole heart.

(When talking about sin, remind your children that this is not how God made us to be. We were made to perfectly love and worship God—without sin in our hearts.)

2. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

Ask your children, “What does sin offer us?” Have them explain to you what it means that “the wages of sin is death.” Tell them that because we have sinned, the punishment for our sin is death. This means that everyone who sins deserves to die.

Next, ask your children how this truth makes them feel. Use their answers to show them their need for a Savior—their need for Jesus. As they reread the verse, ask them what gift God offers us. Explain to them what eternal life is and get them excited to live forever with the One who made them.

3. “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Ask your children what God did to show His love for us. Remind your children of the gospel and how Jesus died in our place on the cross, took the punishment for our sins, and defeated death by being raised from the grave. Tell them that, through Jesus, our sins are forgiven and we can have a relationship with God.

Take some time to have an honest conversation with your children about whether they think Jesus died to forgive their sins.

4. “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift” (Ephesians 2:8).

Ask your children if they know what grace is and help them see how God is gracious to us by not giving us the death we deserve. God is gracious because He gives us the gift of salvation—of eternal life—instead of death.

Next, discuss with your children how we receive salvation. Ask them if they can get to heaven through their good deeds. Show them how incredible it is that there’s nothing we can do to earn salvation—God gives it to us freely because He loves us. All we need to do to receive eternal life is to believe that Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead by God and accept His free gift of salvation.

5. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Ask your children: What does this verse say happens when we believe in Jesus? Discuss with them what “old has passed away” and what “new has come.” Share with them how in Jesus we are made holy like God is holy. Our sinful past is overcome by the blood of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Next, ask your children how they think they should live in this new life. Show them how they are to love God and love others. Brainstorm ways they can love their neighbors and maybe even teach them about the fruit of the Spirit.
