Bible Study Tools: Dwell
We can all probably agree that we ought to read our Bibles. That we ought to know our Bibles. That we should store Scripture up in our hearts. We can also all probably agree that memorizing Scripture is important–but what about whole books of Scripture? What about memorizing more than just a sentence or two? It may not be manageable to memorize an entire chapter of the book of Genesis or Deuteronomy or the entire book of Acts, but what if we started with just a couple of Psalms? What if we start with something manageable with the intention of continually pursuing more?
The Bible is a gracious means by which God communicates to us, His people. In it, we find all that needs to be known (2 Peter 1:3). It is the sharpest sword that discerns our heart and mind (Hebrews 4:12). It is God-breathed and entirely profitable to us (2 Timothy 3:16). Scripture is a necessity in our lives because it runs plumb. It's our rubric of what's true. With each avenue that this world gives us to relay falsehood, we ought to pursue the truth of God's Word. We live in a world where the devil is working to deceive us, and we wear corruptible flesh that continually falls away from God. The great need we have of being reminded of what is true and good cannot be understated.
Because we rely on God's Word, we take up the cause of reading it, studying it, plastering our walls with is–and each of those tasks is a good thing. Scripture memorization often falls by the wayside, though. When you don't have a Bible nearby, or you don't have your favorite mug with your favorite verse–where can you find refuge in the Word of God? And how?
Scripture memorization is crucial because it exercises the muscles of our mind and heart simultaneously. When we store God's Word in our very being, we create a place of dwelling in our hearts. When we seek to remember God's Word, we are caused to meditate on His goodness. So, we memorize Scripture to worship, and we also memorize it to retrieve it in times of need. In those moments of anger, frustration, or confusion, we have a memory bank that preaches to us the goodness of God. When we are filled with delight, encouragement, and pleasure, we have a platform from which we can better worship and praise God.
