Can We Trust the Bible? | Ep. 8

Can We Trust the Bible? | Ep. 8

Episode 8

On today’s episode, we answer an incredibly important question for all believers: Can we trust the Bible? We will get into the nitty gritty details and history behind the Bible. It may be overwhelmingly technical at first, but we have provided helpful notes down below to help you keep the terms straight. We’ll then talk at length about the beauty and glory of God seen in His Word! On this podcast, we are passionate about knowing and studying and loving the Bible because we believe it is the ultimate authority on truth. But we also believe that it’s wise to know that such a bold claim is well-founded. We are staking our faith on our sacred text, the Bible, so it’s important to be able to communicate why we can trust in the Bible. We pray this episode is helpful on your journey to make much of Jesus.

Helpful Notes on the Technical Terms in this Episode:

Canon (means measuring rod) = books that are included the Protestant Bible

39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament (listed here)

The Jewish Bible, called “Tanach”, comes from the Hebrew words Torah (Law), Nebiim (Prophets), and Chetuvim (Writings).

Our Protestant Old Testament is based off the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the Tanach. However, the Septuagint included a few extra books that are NOT included in our Protestant OT. These books that are NOT included are called the Apocrypha (“hidden books”).

Source of New Testament = Jesus and the apostles (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, James, Jude, and Paul. The author of the book of Hebrews is unknown.)

Councils of Hippo (AD 393) and Carthage (AD 397) both affirm the New Testament canon.

We have about 5800 ancient (before 500 AD) manuscripts of the New Testament, which is more than any other ancient writing. Homer’s Iliad comes in second place with 643 manuscripts. Plato’s Republic only has 7. None of the issues regarding New Testament manuscripts call into question essential doctrines of Christianity.

There is remarkable unity: more than 40 different authors over a 1500 year span on 3 different continents (Asia, Africa, Europe) in different literary styles controntributed to the Bible and its one story of God’s redeeming work.
