Being Married to an Unbeliever with Sheila Dougal | Ep. 51

Being Married to an Unbeliever with Sheila Dougal | Ep. 51

Episode 51

On today’s episode, we are grateful to have Sheila Dougal join our conversation on the topic of being married to an unbelieving spouse. Sheila is a wife to James, a mama to two teenage boys, a registered nurse, and the Kids Ministry Director at her local church. Sheila also enjoys making goat’s milk soap and writing; she has had her articles featured on Desiring God and other platforms. Sheila graciously shares her journey of being married to her husband who does not share the Christian faith (for 26 years and counting!). This topic of being married to an unbelieving spouse is one that can be hard to navigate, but she graciously speaks on the topic drawing from what has been her reality for nearly three decades.

She openly answers tough questions like:

  • “Did you know he was an unbeliever before you got married?”
  • “Have you ever thought about leaving the marriage?”
  • “What does submission look like?”
  • “What kind of challenges do you guys face?”

She offers deeply rooted encouragement and guiding principles. She points us to Scripture passages that directly speak to this topic – passages that have been a literal lifeline for her over the years. And through it all, she magnifies the Lord and His unwavering faithfulness to His people throughout the ages. She also bears witness to the beauty and power that is the local church!

This may not be your current situation, but be sure to listen because we also talk about how fellow believers, as the church, can walk alongside a fellow brother or sister in this situation. She also speaks directly to anyone who is considering marrying an unbeliever.
