I am an avid reader and student of the Bible. Over many years I have used various bible study resources and learned different Bible study methods (most recently, my favorite method is the inductive study method as Daily Grace Co. recommends in their studies). Because of my experience, I have become very particular about the study guides I choose to use to aid in my study of Scripture.

I have had friends previously use DGC resources and I’ve glanced through them. However, I had not been drawn to them because they don’t seem like a Bible study. They seem more like a devotional/reflection with reflection questions for each passage.

This past winter/spring I was invited to join some friends for a Bible study. I learned that they were using DGC as their study resource and while hesitant, I decided to join them anyway.

I joined part way through their study of Psalms 31-60, so I didn’t purchase a study guide and did inductive study on my own of the passages to be able to follow along.

When we got to Psalms 61-90, I decided to purchase the study guide to give it a try. Unfortunately, my reservations remained true, if not more true after using the study guide.

Here are my specific reservations:
1) In the intro to the study, there are pages on “How to Study the Bible.” It recommends the inductive study method. I think this is great! However, throughout the actual study guide, there is no room or guidance provided through this and each of the passages. I'm guessing most people might not even notice this guidance or follow it since it's not really incorporated into the study guide.
2) Speaking of the inductive study method, the pacing of this study doesn’t truly allow for it, unless you are able to spend 2-3 hours per day to fully complete the inductive study method on a given passage, then read the written daily reflection, then respond to the daily reflection questions. (This timing varies depending on the length of the Psalm, but I was rarely able to complete a full passage study on a given day in my 45 min-1 hour daily quiet time). If I was completing this study on my own, I could forgo the weekly pacing, but this is a challenge when you are completing the study in a group setting.
3) I didn’t end up reading the written reflections because I want to let scripture interpret scripture rather than letting someone else tell me what it means.

Despite my reservations, this isn’t to say it’s not a good resource, but I think it is simply misnamed. I think this is more of a reflection guide rather than a Bible study. If you want to learn to study Scripture on your own and let Scripture interpret Scripture, I would choose a different resource.

I love all the bible studies I’ve done from The Daily Grace Co.! They are amazing and help guide me through the word of the Lord!
